Presented by: Cheryl Contee (for Hispanic groups)
James Rucker (African Americans)
Tanya Tarr (Asian Americans)
Army Ard. (Sojourners)
Advice specific to these groupings.
-For Asians: Target community associations and their leaders.
-Latinos: A 38% increase in voting last round. Tap into this surge in participation.
-Blacks: Katrina was a wake-up call. But Blacks don't feel invested; suspect that attention to them is focused on vote-getting / empowerment.
Need to engage them in planning process before elections, bring them to the table in a non-racial way. (Dem party lacks the machinery for this.)
Candidates must make sure all votes are counted. Get a plan now!
-Faith-based organizations. How do we reach out to them?
Last elect. suggest that "God-gap" may have dissappeared.
Focus on issues of social justice.
Use "faith language" up front (or you cede it to the Republicans)
In a church, get the ear of the minister's spouse :-)
The panel handed around a list of urls of minority-targeted websites, copied here in the attachment. There was also a handout written by Cheryl Contee on the New Digital Divide.
You are also invited to join an e-group for further discussion. See:
