List Enhancement 301

(Viewed: times)

List enhancement purposes

• extend ability of organizations to do better work for members and supporters

• provide consolidated data layer for cross-organization and cross-domain collaboration

• building progressive organization capability – this is a resource, not a tool, a strategy, a magic bullet

Basic process

• organizational function: membership, campaign, network

• identify project purposes/outcomes and recruit participation

• collect list(s) with a common ongoing purpose – membership, fundraising, e-action, ID, petition, subscriber, prospect, even opponents (choice)

• data cleaning/hygiene: standardize data content and format (schema) while retaining the accuracy of the content

• data extensions/overlays through combination with outside data sources

• public or quasi-public: voter, phone, petition, licenses (hunting, Loon license plates)

• private: consumer, email, IDs

• generate outputs

• return enhanced data in a convenient and reusable/reintegratable format

• generate

• and then something magic happens: cross-list collaborative work

Perspectives and objectives

• trust relationships

• data quality

• economies of scale

• transparency

• security/integrity

Data quality

• “what is truth”

• sources at overall and elemental level

• vintage

• generation

• inherent error rate

Collection & deployment

• problems of data transfer

• list identification

• record completion

• the disaster of metadata

Real world experience

• historically mostly c3 but some c4/PAC/campaign

• techniques are flexible, extensible and scalable

• network and scale economies

• enviro, choice, labor, LGBT, ...

• have usually been driven by major sponsors (foundations or keystone organizations) but increasingly self-assembling and somewhat self-financing
