BarCamp is the inspiration for RootsCamp. If you are from the BarCamp/Geek world, consider spearheading a RootsCamp in your area.

Technology summary:
What is like/different from the Dean perspective?
Why not go through an existing organization? ... organizations come with identity, and even with the most open-minded, inviting organization, the identity is a barrier for entry into a conversation
the reason for doing this isn't having the conversation ...
corporations are creation of the state, we can revoke the charter
invite ourselves to other venues
confusing ... how do I utilize my time, to direct it how to do the best thing I can ... it is strange situation ... the message of partisanship is that it is a bad thing ... when I ask why people are in the middle, I get .. they are making grassroots political decision ... strange to think that I could meet once a month, just for a conversation ... Should I go to
work in a very conservative environment ... spend a good 1/2 hour every day, around the "water cooler" philosophizing ... it has been a good experience ... and I think I have also made some inroads to them as well ... it's good to hear the good arguments from the other side
Maybe you should invite toastmasters to come to RootsCamp? ... it does smack of Kiwanis ... it is really important to me to not to waste a lot of time ...
The big question is whether any action the comes out of this, do you have to endorse anything that comes out? ... is it an organization? does it have a home?
middle of the road and non-partisan are not the same thing ... middle of the road is a partisan decision ... non-partisan means without any form of affiliation (which means you have nothing in your head), which means to me being Independent ... the idea of dialogue is inherently radical ... there is no venue in this community (or elsewhere) for dialogue ... there are a lot of newspapers, engaged in dialogue ... there is not a forum that exists purely to allow a dielctic of ideas ... newspapers will constrain their tolerance for letters to the editor, talk radio will keep things in an even narrower range ... they all have things that will allow to talk in their pages
a forum for dialogue, with the presumption that people will want to be on a panel, present topics ... have a mission statement that says, 'we exist to foster discussions and events, that aren't getting discussed elsewhere' ...
People will want RootsCamp to become something they have ... people will want it to carry their flag
a grant is not so much for getting money, but legitimizing
you can meet other people who are interested in what you
breaking bread together ... are there other activities that could go with the conversation ... go fishing together ...
any group that exists, as I did with this one, is go right or left ... very few groups ... maybe the Pew Center
maybe a Libertarian identity is something invited to other ... in most interpretation, for guns and against taxes
My frame of mind coming in is: why am I going to this? I feel obligated to go to this?
Every location sends a message ... every host site has an identity that will set off flags
When candidates are campaigning for office, there are few events that are widely known ... Smithville lodge, chili supper ... Republicans and Democrats ... pretty intimate ... find yourself sitting at the same table as people of other parties ... it goes a lot better than pure-party events ... feelings are hurt more easily ... these kinds of fish fries, etc used to be a lot more prevalent
it is much easier for me to walk into a room where either people hate me ... it is really hard to talk to someone you want to like or want to like you, and have an argument ... I can't stand to listen to the same things
Chamber business after hours events ... a surprisingly diverse events
I've been to a lot of things like this, and they all seem to follow the same path ... This is not from what I have seen a particularly small group ... There wasn't as much publicity as there could be ... it will die and fizzle out eventually, but don't worry about that now
new forms
