Return to Sessions

Minimum Wage

Lots of resolutions for other things, why can't we have

all this money goes into social programs ...

Why EITC? Why are we making them beg for things? You could make a conservative argument, if you work 40 hours a week, you ought to be able to live ... and it takes pressure off of social services.

Underemployment, even with ... there is no such thing as a 40-hour week in full-time employment

Minimum wage is a good thing ... We don't look at the federal level how much does it take to live. ... We're talking about a 20-25% raise.

Government shouldn't tax the income ... going to say it is inflationary

Worker's bill of rights about everything to do with employment ... only hire people part time, and there will be a pinch in small employers ... IU is going to outsource some services, saving themselves money but denying benefits to displaced employees

single-issue parties - this could be one that almost everyone supports ... all of these Republican office

Talk to city council members, state legislators - do a resolution

referendum question for general public -

... but it is illegal in Indiana to change minimum wage on the state level

localities can't do it when others are not, because the businesses will go to another city ... Living Wage ordinance

Citizens have a right to exist and survive, whether they have a job or not. ... Partly to keep people from becoming slaves, so we want it to be high enough so there is an incentive, but not so high as people get eliminated from the system ... dynamic s have consequences ... small businesses would have problems

Coupled with more comprehensive economic program

Same thing with providing health insurance ...

"They" should be encourages ... We're talking about actual people ... even with a pay raise, they are still below the poverty level, just $14K

4-person family, it's about $19K

There are also people of

I don't have much sympathy for small business owners who can't afford it ... If it's a choice between helping a class of people and a small business going out of business, it is no contest

Tax break ... take it away from Wal-Mart and give it to the small businesses .. It does make financial sense to invest in Wal-Mart, but if you do a local project ... I would say point blank, no more tax abatements, must use local labor ... This concept of development is no concept of development

Summary:

  • What can we do to make it more visible? ... Resolutions ... Make it THE issue in the filling the last council seat
  • What can we do to acknowledge and deal with the other dynamics?
  • don't enable people to continue to ignore?
