Electoral College

People don't know how the system works ... seems more efficient to vote for a candidate

rules

gerrymandering ... could be eliminated with popular vote

weighted votes ... diversity

what if it was by popular vote ... more industrial states would have more turnout, more weight ... representation

if you made it a direct popular vote, the Republicans wouldn't be able to win an election. The nation is left of center. The conservative position is over represented in Congress. ...

If you got rid of it, you would get more people to vote

That's the key, to be informed ... they are more informed about who is playing in the Superbowl, and who in Hollywood is having a baby ... People don't take the time to learn about school board. ... maybe I would like it to be sort of difficult, to make people have to study to be informed ... encouraging people to be educated about

Trying to form some kind of "poor people's party" exporting the idea to others. Up against the classic problem of utility: does the outcome I get from voting worth the effor to do so. ... We used to be able to address this through labor unions, but we don't have that anymore

1% of people who are in impoverish vote ... Head start goes from 1% to 3%. That's not a lot, but it is significant.

People in poverty are part of a system that is institutionalized. ... We do not engage society in the same way as those in poverty. ... Let's put some content in your voice. ... "I'm not this invisible marginalized portion of the county" ... The library is loaded with lots of terminals, but there isn't going to be any information about candidates unless it's just before the election ...

You can get cut off after the a certain time ...

There is not as much about making use of the internet as they could ... lag

Portal to issues and different parties, how to vote, how to vote early ... A constant university

The problems of who is in power is not ...

mulit-party access ... if you had a valid third party in this country, it would become a situation quickly ...

Howard Dean campaign is a good

grow raise candidates at the local level ... Ralph Nader hasn't served one day, yet he is a political power ... populations have to see representatives in the local neighborhood (ie. Black Panther - successful because they did things in their community, people they could trust to do things; Hamas - if I lived in Palestine, I would be working for Hamas to get them into offices) ... we do not have a politician in Monroe County who goes out of their way ...

Summary:

  • Is the electoral college something that needs to be changed?
  • What can help inform voters to make them "worthy" of their vote?
