Healthy Campaign

(Viewed: times)

Session led by Marjorie Roswell. mroswell (at) gmail.com

Still seeking ideas! Add quick healthful recipes to the bottom of the page. Integrate these ideas into training, volunteer to create the documentary or conduct the research, etc. Healthy campaign workers: a winning strategy.

Problem

  • "I almost died on the campaign" - near heart attack
  • "Was so tired, I drove off the road, luckily hit only a trash can."
  • "I got sick with fever. It was pneumonia"
  • "I started smoking again" - it's a social break
  • Always on the go
  • Mental Health a real problem
  • Surrounded by pizza places and bars
  • A colleague spent campaign season in the hospital. Came back too soon, and was coughing up blood.
  • Sick co-workers
  • Candidates with colds, sore throats, vocal problems.
  • Candidate fatigue
  • lack of sleep

Solutions

  • Designate a volunteer or volunteers to food preparation. In one campaign, a volunteer routinely brought in canned asparagus, which the campaign worker appreciated. Another program, the Mankind Project, designated "Men of Service" and found that conferences worked much better when food prep was a designated job.
  • Ask staff to drink a bottle of Vitamin Water daily
  • Unionize Campaign workers! (Health insurance, pensions, unemployment)
  • Create a "Force Family Fun Time Break (before the last few weeks.) Once per week outside of the office a social gathering such as Saturday night. (others said they need to get away from their colleagues once a week!)
  • "I was so glad when a supporter sent a big box of fruit!"
  • Instead of MoveOn saying "Bring Snacks" they could say "Bring Food" or "Bring Healthy Snacks"
  • A carpeted dark room to lie down was essential
  • Throw ball around the office, helps to foster an attitude of fun and relieve stress
  • Get a water dispenser
  • Cot (some like this idea, some say it reinforces that you have to be at the office all the time
  • Positive reinforcement! Designate a cheerleader. "Big Dog Award" "Top 10 Offices Award"
  • Ask sick coworkers to leave
  • Massage therapy - network with schools. Students can get needed hours. Dedicate a person to coordinate massage provider who has a massage chair.
  • Yoga for Organizers. Geek Yoga
  • Collect information and raw numbers. Research this issue! (who can do this?)
  • Exit Memos. Ask people about stress, nutrition, exercise, on their exit questionnaire. Could be a foundation for research.
  • Documentary on YouTube (who can create this?)
  • Myth or BS that you need to be at the office ALL the time. Go home if your project that day is dependent on something else that's not done yet. Better to go home and rest than to have to prove that you are working all the time.
  • Designate a driver for the candidate
  • Vent time. A time not to solve problems... just to talk and vent about 'em.
  • Web-based 3-ups and 3-downs of each day.
  • Maybe require every worker to canvass? for the exercise, and for the people-contact, real-world contact.
  • Buy bagged greens!
  • These ideas are all about enhancing productivity.
  • Training module, including recipes!

Office Equipment

  • Magic Bullet Blender
  • Ball and/or frisbee
  • Cot
  • Water dispenser
  • Dvorak Keyboard or other special keyboard for carpel tunnel
